Summer News 2013

Thank you for your patience over the spring term.
Whilst our members saw a change in the activity schedule we used the time well to restructure the office & appoint new staff.  We are now raring to go and looking forward to the Autumn term of Activities. Despite the change in activities last term we still had lots of fun and made new friends...

May was National Deaf Awareness week and Lollipop along with our members celebrated this in York city centre. Not only did we have the NDCS listening bus along to help us, but also for the first time ever in York, Empire Adventure brought along their mobile caving experience. The weather was not particularly kind to us, however everyone that came along had a great day and we achieved our aim of raising awareness by handing out over 300 lollipops and top tips for communication. Thank you to all that came along and supported us.

LolliPOPin
April saw the 1st of 3 LolliPoPin drop in sessions held in New Earswick. The sessions were split into 2 age groups and those that attended enjoyed designing their own aprons, producing yummy treats, playing games and most of all having fun. The sessions which ran over 3 months, included Yummy, Critter and Carnival Popin. Led by Lisa Laverick, everyone enjoyed their time and produced some wonderful crafts.

Our younger members are still enjoying their Lollitots drop in sessions on the second Saturday of each month, whilst parents enjoyed the relaxed interaction with others. If you have a preschool child with hearing loss come along and join us.

Our young people still enjoy their regular LYP meetings whilst also helping to plan future events. This term they have enjoyed decorating Easter bunnies, pyrography and designing notice boards as well as building friendships around the football table and Wii.  With lots of exciting activities planned, you don’t want to miss a session, so please keep a check on your schedule & mark the dates in your diary.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park
On a lovely sunny day in July members up to the age of 13 and their families set off for what was to be a wonderful day at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. For this trip coaches were laid on from York, Scarborough and Northallerton. Members enjoyed walking through and feeding the Lemurs and Wallabys, were entertained at the Animal Action Theatre, and played in the forest adventure play area. At the end of a fantastic day members came together to enjoy an ice-cream in the sun, followed by play in the new Monkey Play House, before boarding the coach home.

Segways
Our 13+ members also enjoyed a lovely hot sunny day for their trip to Dalby Forest. Members arrived, enjoyed a picnic with friends and then (for the first time ever for many) took to the forest on segways. Everyone had a great time whizzing through the forest enjoying the hot sun and spectacular views. Despite some of us having balance issues we all stayed on including Andrea!  Well done everyone!!!

Behind the Scenes
We are so excited about introducing you to our new office team.  Alice Thatcher as our new Activity Co-ordinator and Emily Morrissey as our new Administrator.  Alice works Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and Emily works Tuesday and Thursday.  Both Alice and Emily joined the team mid June.  Welcome aboard the Good Ship Lollipop, ladies!  We
promise you lots of fun times ahead.

Hello! My name is Alice, the new Activities Co-ordinator. I am a qualified Youth Worker
from Devon, bringing with me my experience of working with vulnerable children and young people for the British Red Cross, and local support services for families in Liverpool. I am so excited to be welcomed into the Lollipop family- it is a great charity that offers
positive opportunities for children and I can’t wait toget involved! The team are lovely and I look forward to meeting many more of the committed ‘Lollipoppers’ that are part of the charity’s success.

Hello, my name is Emily and I have recently joined Lollipop as the new Administrator. My childhood was spent in South Africa where I studied Archaeology and Music therapy.  I came to London and worked as an Administrator in Theatre in Education, English Heritage & for an Education Charity.  I started a family and have since worked as a freelance proof reader and editor.  I am so pleased to once again be working in the Chartable Sector, and more specifically with the needs of children & their families.   I have really enjoyed the short time I have been at Lollipop, working as
part of such a committed and friendly team.  I look forward to continuing to support the aims of this wonderful charity.
